Trying to figure out why things that happened recently seem very far away, while things recollected that happened long ago seem very near.

I think it has to do with the strength of the experiences. Recent experiences are weak [not generically; just mine] so they are vague, but they are still recent enough to be remembered. Old experiences that are weak are forgotten, but those that are remembered are remembered because they are strong, even though they are old.
